Partnered with Estee Lauder Companies Online, my team and I created a holistic skin care diary app that pairs customer inputted information and information gathered from APIs to surface trends to users that will allow them to make better skin health decisions.

Our users

Meet Jenny

Jenny is a 28 years old young woman who cares about her skin’s health. She has breakouts frequently and acne marks she has wanted to remove. She has been trying different skincare products but no matter how many products she has tried, she still has large pores, acne, and breakouts. She feels disappointed by the effectiveness of the skincare products.

Introducing Dayly

Feature 1

Skin Analysis

Like many skincare products’ customers, Jenny have the habits of monitoring their skin health. Jenny does it mostly by merely looking to the glass by herself. However, after uploading a selfie to Dayly, Jenny understands her skin's conditions further as Dayly uses artificial intelligence helping Jenny to analyze her skin issues such as spots, pores, texture, and fine lines objectively.

Feature 2

Holistically track skin health

Jenny focuses on using products to improve their skin’s health but they neglect the fact that personal lifestyles such as eating habits, sleep time, and hydration level could contribute to many skin issues. Dayly tracks users’ skincare products, lifestyle, and mood to see how they affect users’ skin.

Feature 3

Tailored and personal recommendation on skincare products

Based on the skin report, Dayly gives Jenny a list of recommended skincare products that match her skin type and daily routine.

How we got there...

Positioning

User Research Findings

We conducted 5 semi-structured interviews with people who have purchased skincare products before and created a survey that got about 30 respondents. We sought to understand the following: (1) Wants and Desires (2) Concerns (3) Purchase Journey, including product discovery, trigger, and shopping patterns/behavior. We summarized the research findings into an empathy map and infographics below.

Competitive Analysis

Besides, we also conduct industry’s research. There are already Virtual Lip Try-on on Estée Lauder and MAC cosmetics’ websites, and Voice on Bobbi Brown and La Mer’s websites. We discovered opportunities for Estee Lauder to leverage the existing technology and the data they have collected to further develop the “in-the-moment” personalized experience for our consumers

Our Solution

Leveraging the existing data and infrastructure from the Estee Lauder, we created a holistic skincare app that could help users to get tailored and personal recommendations on skin care products based on their skin health and daily habit. It can minimize the risk of buying many different products which have no effects in improving skin health. This app is expected to increase users’ engaging rate, sales and boost brand images in the long run.

We identified several risks that will fail the success of the app, and we developed a experiments' plan to mediate the risks.

Using paper prototypes, we conducted guerrilla testing and iterated on our design for the high fidelity prototype.

How does Dayly work?

Jenny can compare her skin condition by looking at the daily analyzes.

Jenny can take a selfie and get an accurate analysis of her skin from Dayly.

Jenny can log her habits every day in a minute and get an analysis of it.

Jenny can get an updated product recommendation to improve her skin condition and buy the product in the app without going back and forth between apps.

Reflection

What I learned?

I learned how to scope down ideas into a solution that targets our persona and considers the competitive landscape. Working in a class team project also sharpened my project management skills. This project opened my eyes to the possibilities of using image analysis as a solution.

What could we make it further?

Because of time constraints, we did not create a statistics comparison feature and we focused more on the A.I. skin analysis feature, which is more valuable to the users and business team. We need to build out the comparison between skin health score and daily habit log, which would increase the accuracy of the product recommendations.
